Space Iceland was set up in 2018 and formalised in 2019. The Space Iceland project grew and became bigger than we ever foresaw. Space Iceland was started by a group of people, researchers and companies interested in amplifying Iceland’s potential of bringing the benefit of space exploration, innovation and usage of space-based infrastructure for the benefit of society. In recent years Iceland has seen an increase in activity, startups and significantly more openness to these opportunities and the idea that Iceland can play a role in the utilisation of space-related innovation. This means that the role of Space Iceland will be changing. We will therefore be winding down while deciding on the next steps and future role of this project.

Space Iceland is taking a break to allow us all to rest a little after years of hard work. For now, Space Iceland will not take on any new partners or commit to new projects while we figure out the next steps. Projects already started and cooperation ongoing will however continued or found a new place among direct participants. In 2022 Space Iceland signed an agreement with Bifröst University on space sector development with an emphasis on innovation, law and policy research.

Space Iceland has brought sub-orbital rocket launches to Iceland, seen the formation of startups, habitat simulations, rover-testing and legal and policy research while supporting, and sponsoring students and interns and promoted Copernicus and the usage of space-based infrastructure in traditional industries since founded. After all our work Iceland now has more players than before. This simply means that our team needs a break and to decide what is best moving forward.
